20 March 2020 We know what you’re thinking: “Flip charts? Aren’t those so old school?” The answer: yes, but they also happen to be one of the most effective and affordable training tools available. First of all, they are low tech. You can use flip charts in a variety of environments regardless of electrical and technological resources. Secondly, and most importantly, they enhance the learner experience. Use Flip Charts to Enhance Learning Flip charts give your learners a place to collect information, which ultimately helps them connect better with content Because they are portable, you can bring them out at any time to reference over the course of your training. (Remember, you need to revisit content six times for it to transfer.) They also provide a summary of the course content. You can put the flip charts up around the room to create a journey of your training for your learners to review Flip charts make your training interactive. By allowing your learners to write on the sheets, they become more engaged and focused Tips for Using Flip Charts Effectively Your visuals should not be the star of the show. Avoid creating unnecessary distractions (too many colours, numbers and images) Draw or write your content lightly in pencil on the corner of your flip chart sheets ahead of time. Your learners won’t be able to see your notes, but you will have access to the information you need for each sheet. These can be facts or figures you can’t easily remember or diagrams you can’t draw from memory Start planning early! You should lay out the flow of your flip charts early enough so you can review and make changes beforehand By Rich Meiss
